Position Summary

Under the supervision of the classroom staff, the substitute teacher will assist in executing an educational program in line with Head Start/State Preschool's educational goals and beliefs.

 Key Areas of Responsibilities and Duties The duties of this position are those described below.   1. Program Services/Operations (100 %)
  • Assists staff in implementing the instructional program in the classroom
  • Keeps all personal information about children, families, and staff members confidential
  • Assists staff in setting up work areas
  • Assists staff in carrying out activities required by the daily lesson plan
  • Directs individual and small group learning experiences in cooperation with staff members
  • Guides children in working and playing harmoniously with others being consistent with teacher's discipline methods and reinforces positive social behaviors
  • Helps to maintain a safe work and play area and is responsible for the health, safety and well-being of the children at the center
  • Closely supervises and actively participates with children during playground activities
  • Eats with the children and reinforces appropriate mealtime behavior
  • Provides assistance to children, when necessary, but encourages them to increase self-help skills

Minimum Qualifications

          Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 6 ECE units completed or 3 ECE units completed and enrolled in 3 ECE units
  • Some experience working with young children preferred

 

       Ability to:

  • Perform the job of teaching small children (able to walk, run, climb, bend, reach, etc.)
  • Must enjoy children and be able to relate to them in a supportive and non-judgmental way
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
  • Work cooperatively with staff, clients and community from varied backgrounds and experiences
  • Portray a positive attitude
  • Function as a team player/member

Physical Demands:

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Required Physical Activities:

  • Able to lift and carry children up to 40 pounds
  • Able to stand for up to a minimum of 4-7 hours at a time and to sit for up to one hour at a time
  • Must be agile enough to perform the job of teaching small children: able to walk, run climb, bend, reach, etc.

  

Special Requirements

  • Criminal background clearance as required by licensing agency
  • Physical Examination, proof of current negative TB test, immunizations required by Community Care Licensing and current influenza shot
  • Valid California Driver's License and proof of current automobile insurance coverage
  • Willingness to work irregular hours and attend night meetings based upon needs of the business
